Phyllis Diller

Phyllis Diller starred as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the original Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! for a limited three-month engagement. Her run began on December 26, 1969, and concluded in March 1970 at the St. James Theatre in New York City. Diller opened one week after Barbra Streisand’s film version premiered up the street. She had a three-month run on Broadway. Danny Lockin was appearing on stage with Phyllis – as Barnaby Tucker – AND on film with Barbra at the same time!

After Diller’s stint, Ethel Merman took over the role until the end of the show’s run in December 1970.
