Lyric Theatre’s second summer production at the Civic Center is the classic musical “Hello, Dolly!”  The story of Dolly Gallagher Levi is based on a Thornton Wilder play, with book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman.  This is another case of a much-revised story; the original inspiration is from a British play written in 1835. Carol Channing and Dolly Levi made each other famous. Channing won a Tony for playing the original version of Levi, the titular vivacious widow in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway in 1964. Then for the next 30 years, according to Playbill, Channing played the role for more than 4,000 performances, never missing a single one. Read MORE

It only takes a moment to fall in love with “Hello, Dolly!”

The classic musical is just packed with indelible moments: when the title character uproariously stuffs her face with dumplings while the entire ensemble looks on; when the nimble waiters frolic with their silver trays and ice buckets in the restaurant scene; and, of course, when Dolly makes her dramatic Act 2 entrance at the top of the staircase in her sparkling red gown.
